MANAGEMENT OF SEVERE DEHYDRATION AND ELECTROLYTE IMBALANCE Parrots are known for their curious nature and sometimes this proves to be fatal! Sadhu (Blue-and-gold Macaw) is a very playful and curious in learning new things and attempting them. Sadhu consumed food not prescribed for it before it was identified and removed. But this curiosity landed up in severe diarrhea. Close observation of companion birds is essential and can save its life when attended immediately. Sadhu was started with antibiotic and probiotic, but severe diarrhea caused severe electrolyte imbalance and there forth resulted in decreased gut mobility leading to stasis of ingested food and medicine in the crop. This became a vicious cycle with diarrhea caused increased dehydration and weakness in Sadhu. Sadhu was given immediate medical assistance at sgsbirdsparadise and it saved birdâs life. After initial non responsive oral rehydration and medicines to stop diarrhea, intravenous fluids were given for the bird to recover from severe dehydration and electrolyte imbalance, since severe dehydration itself can be fatal if untreated. After Sadhu was re-hydrated with fluid and electrolytes through parenteral route, antibiotic was given for 5 days and probiotic for 10 days orally. Sadhu is healthy and normal like earlier and never had any health issues after that till date. More

SURGICAL CORRECTION OF OPEN FRACTURE A Triton-crested Cockatoo was gifted to sgsbirdsparadise as the owner was shifting to different place for job. All newly arrived birds are quarantined at the Bird care unit âPari Vanaâ. Quarantining newly arrived birds would help the birds to gradually get acquainted with food and acclimatized with climate. This period would help identify any disease aliments, behavioral problem of bird and to understand bird psychology, under expert supervision. This would not only help treating the bird and but also prevent overtaxing of medicine for the existing healthier group of birds at sgsbirdsparadise. Once the new arrival birds are healthy they are grouped with the older group of birds at sgsbirdsparadise based on birdâs psychology. This bird had an abnormal behavior of always staying in a corner, hiding its right wing and less food intake. On examination there was an open fracture (wound area with bone exposed) of right wing bone. The bird was not human friendly too, allowing the bird to be comfortable and prevent excess stress along with journey stress, bird was initially given treatment for the wound to heal and bird to settle down. Later a surgery was posted for fracture correction. Fracture is corrected and bird is now human friendly too and dances on various musical notes hence it was given a pet name âNatyaâ. Natya is doing well at sgsbirdsparadise. More

PREVENTION OF NECROTIC DERMATITIS Kali, the African Grey Parrot proved as one of the most intelligent birds of sgsbirdsparadise. Kaliâs wings were badly clipped when she arrived Shuakavana. Before its next molting, Kali tried flying and landed on its keel bone and hurt itself with bleeding injury. The area was cleaned and anticoagulants were applied locally. As a part of removing local irritation, kali started pecking the wound area, hence immediately E.collar was given and treated with medicines for 7 days to prevent necrotic dermatitis. Vitamin supplements for faster healing and to improve skin condition too were given orally. Kali gradually improved and wound being healed completely, the collar was removed. Kali now has good fight feathers after the molting. More

VITAMIN SUPPLIMENTS Beautiful black cockatoo, the âPalm Cockatooâ with its red bare skin and black beak looks attractive with its retractile crest. But beak of this bird was not in good shape, ruling out all clinical conditions, bird was diagnosed to have calcium deficiency due to which beak was chipped off in pieces and finally appeared abnormal. It is rare but simple vitamin deficiencies can manifest and mimic other serious ailments. After reaching sgsbirdsparadise calcium supplements along with vitamin D3 were given. This bird along with the supplements also enjoyed regular play and interactive sessions with other birds during morning hours. This helped the bird to fill the patchy area of the beak. Though the shape of the beak is not hooked as Psittacines, but otherwise bird is healthy and consumes food normally. Now Palm Cockatoo receives balanced diet as other birds in sgsbirdsparadise do. This bird had selected its partner during the interactive flight time. Palm Cockatoo is healthy and happy too at Shuakavana. More
